Start With Total Cost, Not a Brand Category

I’ve been a procurement manager at a 200-person industrial maintenance and facility services company for six years. It makes me the person who gets blamed when a low price turns into a high-cost failure.

My crew painted a pressure-treated deck for a client two years ago. I assumed the lumber was dry because it had sat in a warehouse. I skipped the moisture check. Once you assign the scenario, compare vendors on the same basis. Include expected service life, surface preparation, number of coats, cure time, maintenance access, and downtime. If a supplier offers only a price per liter, the comparison is not complete. It’s a map with no scale.

The Bottom Line

AkzoNobel coatings can be the right choice in all three buckets. That’s what a broad portfolio actually means. But the brand is not the specification. The product family must fit the scenario, and the purchase decision must include the cost of failure, not only the cost of the can.
