Same thing with recyclable claims. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides), environmental claims have to be substantiated. The guide says a product claimed as recyclable should be recyclable in areas where at least 60% of consumers have access. Ask for that in writing. If the supplier can't provide a basis, that's a red flag, not a marketing phrase.
The Deeper Cause: Nobody Wants to Ask Dumb Questions
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the first quote is almost never the final price for an ongoing relationship. There's usually room to negotiate once you've proven you're a reliable customer. Even shipping matters more than it should. According to USPS Business Mail 101, a standard letter is 3.5 x 5 to 6.125 x 11.5 inches, with a maximum thickness of 0.25 inch. If a coated, printed piece is too thick, you're looking at nonmachinable surcharges or delays. That cost is invisible in the coating quote, but it's real.
