Short answer: coatings. That's the entire business, and the portfolio is broader than most people realize within that category — decorative paints (you know Dulux), powder coatings (Interpon), marine coatings (International), automotive and aerospace coatings (Sikkens), plus wood and coil coatings. If you need a surface protected and you can't find an AkzoNobel product designed for it, I'd be surprised.
A lot of people still picture us as a chemicals conglomerate. We haven't been one since 2018, when the specialty chemicals side was divested. These days, it's coatings only — and that focus means a buyer can specify across product lines with the same quality systems underneath. I used to think the spec tolerance on dry film thickness was bureaucracy. Nobody needs to check every section, right? Then I saw a hull where the coating failed at 18 months because the applicator got "close enough" with thickness in the splash zone. The rework cost the owner six figures and two extra weeks in the yard. All to save maybe three percent on the coating purchase. That lesson stuck.
The International brand has been on ships for well over a century. It covers everything from anti-corrosive primers to antifoulings and topcoats. But the premium isn't in the tin — it's in documented consistency. How do I coat wood with epoxy resin without messing it up?
Very doable. Almost every failure I've seen in wood epoxy comes down to prep, not the product. Here's the honest version of the process:
- Sand to 120–220 grit. Epoxy doesn't bond well to smooth, sealed, or dusty wood.
- Check moisture content. Above about 12%, wood outgasses during curing and you get cloudy spots (blushing). A moisture meter costs less than one botched pour.
- Weigh the resin and hardener. Pouring by eye can easily be 10–15% off. Follow the ratio specified on your product, not a generic formula from a forum.
- Seal first, then pour. A thin seal coat, let it get tacky, then the thick coat. This stops air bubbles from the wood grain ruining your surface. It's the classic beginner mistake.
- Respect the pot life. If a mixed batch has 30 minutes of working time, don't mix enough for an hour-long pour.
- Wear gloves and a respirator rated for organic vapors. Epoxy sensitization is real and permanent. You don't want to learn that one the hard way.
Temperature matters as much as the mix ratio. Below about 18°C, epoxy cures so slowly it can stay tacky for days. Above 30°C, the reaction speeds up and the pot life shortens dramatically. Practice on scrap wood first — cheaper than learning outgassing on the piece you actually care about.
Are PTFE coatings safe?
Short answer: yes, for normal use. But the question deserves straight talk, because there are two real concerns hiding behind it.
Temperature. PTFE is stable up to roughly 260°C (500°F). Above that, it starts to break down and release fumes that cause polymer fume fever — a temporary flu-like condition with chills and headache. That's what the "Teflon poisoning" stories are usually about: a pan left empty on high heat. Unpleasant. Temporary. Easily avoided.
PFOA. This was the processing aid used in older PTFE manufacturing, and it's the chemical that actually caused the health concerns. Under EPA pressure, major producers committed to eliminating PFOA by 2015 — and they met that deadline. A nonstick pan from any reputable brand today isn't made with PFOA.
We don't make PTFE at AkzoNobel — our coating chemistry is different — but I've reviewed fluoropolymer specs for years. My quality take: per FTC guidance (ftc.gov), any "safe," "non-toxic," or "green" claim that can't be backed by test data is marketing, not information. Ask for the data. If the supplier can produce it, great. If they get defensive, you have your answer.
