Here's an opinion that has cost me more bids than it has won: if I can't explain every line item on a coatings quote, I shouldn't have sent the quote.

This is where transparency gets uncomfortable. If a client asks for a similar generic powder, I'll quote it—but I'll also quote the verification steps needed to prove it works. That costs money. It's a hidden cost that a lot of buyers don't see until the generic powder fails salt spray or doesn't transfer in the spray booth. Should mention: generic powders can absolutely be acceptable, but the burden of validation should be explicit.

I'm not saying every non-branded powder is bad. I'm saying the brand decision shouldn't be made in silence. When a buyer substitutes a generic because the price is lower, they've traded a known performance envelope for an unknown one. Sometimes that works. Sometimes it doesn't. The transparent quote shows you the cost of finding out. The opaque quote hides it.

Field Training for Custom Coatings Is the Missing Line Item

In March 2024, a food-equipment fabricator in the Portland area called at 3 p.m. on a Thursday. They had 40 custom-coated parts destined for a product launch the following Monday.
